16v Scorpion alarm fun and games
« on: 22 December 2014, 18:35 »
So on replacing the ignition coil for separate  misfire issue, I can now no longer get the car to start because the immobiliser won't disengage...

I think it's the scorpion system that's the issue because it's either that or the starter motor, and that's been absolutely fine up to now. Also, the alarm itself has been iffy recently...going off overnight for no reason etc.

I've tried jumping it, bumping it, checked all the fuses and dont know what to do.

It's looking like i'll have to call an alarm specialist out to rip the damn thing out and install a new one.

Before I do that:

1) Has anyone had anything like this happen before?
2) Did a scorpion alarm come as standard with the 16v GTI? (i'm trying to work out whether it's aftermarket or not)
3) Any advice?

Thanks again all.

Does the car start and then cut out after 3 seconds? Or just not fire up at all? I was under the impression that the factory fitted immobiliser allowed the car to start initially but if there is an issue it will cut the engine after 3 seconds.

Have you got access to diagnosis? I know my TDI shows immobiliser fault codes via VCDS. Not too sure on the petrol cars.

I can't help much with your specific questions but I would recommend looking behind the fuse box and ignition cowl for an additional wiring.

Normally alarms are wired into:
12v constant feed
12v ignition feed
Earth
Door control solenoids
Window motors
and all the additional sensors it requires.

I've recently bought a car that came with an aftermarket alarm fitting (thankfully it was disengaged and the car still ran). I pulled it all out in about 15 minutes. Very easy, you just need to patch up where the installer made the connections to the existing loom (usually re-soldering or in my case, remove scotch locks and wrap tape around).

Rip it out yourself, it's really not hard.

Just in case your fob looks like this:

its an original dealer fit scorpion alarm and does not immobilise.
My old 8V had one and it died in the cold one winter, very easy to disconnect -you just need to bridge 2 wires to maintain central locking.
