Air filters and set ups!
« on: 30 April 2014, 12:53 »
As this topic keeps coming up, regardless how many topics there are on it, does anyone actually have any facts about what is 'the best' now I know it will depend on stages etc.

Take me for example, I have tried nearly every type going, and I do prefer the quiet stock box with a pipercross filter or something inside but it really seemed to struggle for air.... I would still like to go back to this if I can as it seems the 'best' option for me as I want it quiet when needed but then when I open it up I want to hear it

Someone with some stats in terms of what they can handle etc would be good...
ARZ K03s, Oettinger Side Skirts, R32 front, Carbon stage 2, Forge 007p (yellow spring), Forge Actuator (yellow spring), Pipercross panel filter with DSG parts, N249 and N112 deleted, SAI deleted, Carbon canister deleted, Rear wiper deleted, Long Life turbo back custom exhaust with 200 cell sports cat, VR6/G60 clutch kit, Creation Motorsport TIP, Catch can, 'Wellycooler', K04 charge pipe, S3 ported inlet manifold - looks pretty standard on the outside though :)

All the others tend to be what do you have.... I want to know what can it cope with.....

I want facts as opposed to opinions really

Right. I have wasted a lot of money on this too.
So I have the stock set up. Silicone forge TIP. PiperX foam filter. 710N DV. However where the OE snorkel meets the box, I have opened it up an inch or so either side.

So it gets all the cold air from the OE intake, yet can suck up as much sure as it can swallow.

I have also taken the plastic mesh out where the normal intake starts from under the bonnet.
No silly induction roar. Just a nice subtle DV sound

Hmmm, I've currently got a pipercross filter and the OE airbox along with venair TIP and Forge 007p. I've ran a larger cold air feed from the front bumper vent which I've drilled and am going to open up the bottom of the airbox some more.

The induction noise from the S2k filter was annoying me a bit and I'm enjoying the quiet of the OE box.

Best set up IMO. I thought the s2k was awful. Sounded like the fast and the furious and felt like it lost a lot of low down drivability

I can't fault the S2000 filter it works well the rest of hardware and seems to pull harder top end although did fit a SFS supersize TIP at the same time.

I like the induction roar too

Think there was a thread on Audi Sport comparing airbox vs Jetex vs S2000.

I'd do some logging but don't have a working VCDS lead nor a standard airbox

I can do some logs with mine to see, but it'll have to wait until I've got some spare time.
