TD starter in GTI - bearing too small??!!
« on: 05 November 2014, 22:00 »
Hey

Car is mk2 8v with 2L conversion but running an 020 box.

Brought a new starter and after a little research decided to get a mk2 TD starter motor as they are "beefier"

Brought this model after reading a few good reviews about ATP

However tried to fit it today and it wouldn't fit into the gearbox. On comparison the input shaft part is larger than the one I removed.

I removed the bush too and there was definitely no way it would fit around the new starter.
Wondered if there was a different size bush for diesel starters but nothing, in fact pretty much every watercooled vw before 1995 uses the same bush!

Vw spec - 11mm ID 13.6mm OD
I ideally need - 12mm ID 13.6mm OD

I found this (14mm OD) and considered making a thin cut down one side so that when it was inserted it would squeeze in on itself and fill the gearbox hole?

Am I missing something or have I been sent / ordered the wrong starter?
