Speedo Accuracy
« on: 17 March 2014, 17:01 »
As far as I know, all car speedos over-read your actual speed but my GTD is far closer to the real speed (as tested by independent GPS) than any other car that I have owned.

In my Mk 6, the over-read varied depending on the speed that you were doing but at 74 indicated, you were really doing 70.

On the Mk 7, it seems to be a constant 2 mph over-read, regardless of the speed that you are doing.

Has anybody else tested their car to see what it does?

Comparing my speedo against my TomTom, the speedo seems to over-read by 3mph at all speeds.

There used to be a way on the Scirocco to bring up true speed on the AC unit display. I wonder if the Golf can do the same trick...

This seems to tally with the more accurate MPG readings, if assuming MPG and speedo are using the same data for miles.

I've been worrying that my GTi has been underestimating speed. We've got a few of those warning speed detectors round our way, and keeps flashing at me to slow down when I am at or under the speed limit. I've decided that these things are just not calibrated correctly.

That's the same for my speedo.

I also checked the odometer and that was virtually dead on (actually under-registered by a fraction of a percent over 10 miles).  Having established that I checked the fuel computer a few times with the same filling technique and that was consistently just over 1mpg optimistic.

All in all pretty good really.
