I recently misplaced my only key to my Golf and am in the process of getting a new key from the dealer.
They hinted that I take a look online about possible ways of linking the key to the car that would be cheaper than the £30 pounds the dealer charges.

These two machines were mentioned..

and

I am not familiar with either of these machines as I only have a U281.

If anyone has any experience with either of the two machines above can they tell me if you can programme a key with a transponder to your car without having to rely on dealer assistance and how I would go about doing that-a sort of step by step guide.

The VW dealer near me the parts gentleman is sort of hinting that these methods work and I should look into them. If not I can get the key programmed through the dealer for £30.

Any help would be appreciated as I would buy one of the units above and then use it to link my key to my car if possible. I will then have the technology to do this for anyone else who may need it.

he's got a mk3.

the second one is clearly out, mk4 is the earliest it can do.
the first not 100% sure but don't think vag tacho can do anything on mk3, since the immobiliser is not in dash...

as i've said, if you come to malvern i can do it for you.
VW will give you the 7 digit code if you tell them the immobiliser ID code (this can be read with vcds - even a demo version).
all you need is this code (plus dealer id and date) and obviously a new key with the rfid chip inside. see ***

if you're a bit flexible i might be able to meet you somewhere after one of my jobs at a services (travel all over midlands for work every day)

***
Write down the 14 digit Immobilizer ID number (from diagnostics; this would normally be something like VWVZ3Z0Txxxxxxx)

Take that ID number to your dealer and request your seven-digit SKC, along with the workshop code and importer number and the date it was retrieved by the dealer (all this information can be found in the upper-right corner of the Administration screen of the dealer's VAS 5051).

Thanks for the offer, I will definitely take you up on it at some point in the future.

I think I will just get the key programmed by the dealer and leave it at that. They said that two keys will cost me £75 or one will cost £55 and that they will programme one or two keys at the same time, so no extra cost for programming the second key. The other key will turn up eventually but I think it will no longer work once they link the new keys to the car.

Lesson learned-never leave your keys where your kids can get to them..:)

when you go to vw ask them to give you a printout with the 7 digit code and other stuff, then you can recode the other key when it turns up again. :)

mk3 keys can be reprogrammed indefinite number of times.

shame you can't get key made from lock
