I work for Audi and we replace a lot of pistons/rings and it not too much of a big job,it's not worth having a a new engine if you only require piston rings.

It was always on A4/A5 2.0 TFSI oil consumption :)

Thanks - that's really helpful. Is there anyway I can be sure it's the piston rings eg compression test? Before embarking on the job? I'm assuming it's still a big job even if it's less than the replacement engine

The dealer's Service Manager has said he checked with VW and the oil consumption is within th etolerances of normal (just). He doubts it will ever start to use more oil in the future.

A couple of people have suggested changing to 5w40 which I will do, hoepfully with the blessing of the local dealer. Interestingly when it was first serviced the dealer put a 1 litre top up can in the boot and I swear that was 5w40. Did VW change the spec to 5w30 at some point?

I'm also thinking of getting the dealer to do a compression test when it is serviced (even if I have to pay for this myself)
