Do you have ELSAWIN available?

If not I could email you a lot of disassembly diagrams from the workshop manual.

What are you going to do about DRLs? The early xenon cars had dip beam, tail lights and number plate lights all on as there was no separate DRL lamp. Most people didn't like that, so turned them off.

Mine will be off - tails lights is all you need if you want a DRL. Legally cars produced in Europe from Feb 2011 onwards have to have full DRLs, mines a MY10 so doesn't matter.

Tail lights? Anyway, even if your car was a 2011 or newer, it doesn't legally need to have DRLs. The legislation is that new models produced after March 2011 must have them. The Mk6 Golf was in production before then, so was type approved without them.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Where is the cecm? I'm guessing around the steering wheel area and fuse box area? Is it easy to have a look to what I've got as I don't have vcds at the moment

This is what I read through but I guess as your saying it doesn't have the pins then a highland cecm is required

I have Elsawin, thanks for the offer though. You are right that it says to remove the knee airbag, which actually looks simple enough - i just don't like going anywhere near airbags!, i'll follow the precautions on the workshop manuals.

Its located under the steering wheel area.

Workshop guide for CECM removal: http://volkswagen.workshop-manuals.com/golf-mk6/index.php?id=2029
and the relay carrier attached to it: http://volkswagen.workshop-manuals.com/golf-mk6/index.php?id=2022
and the knee airbag! : http://volkswagen.workshop-manuals.com/golf-mk6/index.php?id=1158

As you can see its not easy to get to for removal / checking.
