My valver couldn't find 1st or reverse when i picked it up and i thought i needed a new one/reconditioned, turned out it just needed linkages sorting out. But thats a different gearbox to the 8v.

I am fairly certain you just need to adjust or repair your linkage. This happened on an old 8v of mine. Very easy to do, 1 spanner in the haynes manual probably lol, although changing the ball joint at the bottom of the gear stick looked like a mare to change so I didn't bother with changing that.
