Golf Mk4 Cluster replacement
« on: 21 March 2013, 10:48 »
Hello,

Really need some help with this. My VW Golf MK4 TDI 1998 developed a problem where the speedo stopped working all together and the fuel gauge wobbles when entering a bend etc. I have had the gear stick sensor replaced and it still does it. A garage has ran a full diagnostics also and everything came up in order.

The rules have now changed as of yesterday for an MOT that now means you must have a working speedo hence why I am now in a panic to get it fixed as its due in April.

One thing I have not done is replace the cluster unit. Now I have seen some vids and looks fairly straight forward to do but I am concerned as I have heard from a garage that the immobiliser has to be reset so I may not be able to do it my self. does anyone know if this is the case or if I could replace the cluster unit my self with no issues??

thanks so much for your help.

Pretty sure you will require VAGCOM to code in the new cluster...

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?board=73.0 - Take a look here, loads of info on coding and clusters.

gear stick sensor??

most common cause of failed speedo in a mk4 is the wires coming from the speedo sensor on the gearbox, follow them along the top of the gearbox and they rub through/break. You'll need to take the battery tray out to see it properly
