Thats the oil buzzer!

Check the level of oil, if ok do an oil and filter change! - oil - VAG syta silver (gsf) , genuine vw oil filter! (VAG)

Also check the plastic bit between the dip stick and the metal tube the dip stick goes in (don't know techancal name) :)

These can break and give a false oil level!

The oil light and buzzer on mean you shouldn't be driving the car, its the warning for low oil pressure, I would be inclined to not drive the car and get the oil pressure checked myself to make sure everything is ok.

The electrics in the dash sometimes go pete tong but better to be safe then sorry.

Deefadog means that you should use quantum silver oil and a genuine VAG oil filter.

also you can get the genuine filter from gsf but you have to ask for it, they are only a few quid. cheaper than halfords and you know your getting the best one!
check for leaks etc as this can drop the pressure. there are two pressure switches. one is a low pressure one which is activated when you start the car, the other is a higher pressure one and should read 2 bar at 2000 revs and over  so its more likely this one thats making the noise/lights come on. but a good oil flush/change should cure it.

Have had the same problem of late.  LIght only on for a second before going out, but have recently done a full service with Synta silver and genuine filter.  Am I correct in thinking that the engine takes 4litrs with a new filter?  If not it will need a little topping up, but level on dipstick seems OK.

BTW- spoke to a VW guy near me who said that if you have changed the speedo the blue circuit piece sometimes gets worn with time and this can cause the buzzer to come on.  Anyone else come across this?
