Argh f***ing turbos!

Ok so my car has been into the garage for what I thought was a blowing exhaust or manifold...but the kind people at the garage tell me that my turbo is cracked and needs reconing. At the beautiful sum of £400 as well as the timing belt, water pump and MOT! Wallet is getting ready for a shock ha ha. Rant over!

What size is the crack?  95% of k03* turbos are cracked in the collector/around wastegate.

I don't know how much it would cost for fitting a turbo at an independent garage, but here's a KO3 for £170. It was on at £290 and then £250, so they'll obviously negotiate. It came off a '07 plate Gti and I phoned them a few weeks back and they said it had less than 30k miles on it....
