also when i have searched for part 46 ( 1J0711761) on the net - it looks very different to the part i need:
(see photo). when you ordered the part was it the correct item?

any help would be much appreciated :undecided:

well i ordered the part at my local vw garage cost about £10 and once i put it on i didnt have to re align any gears

I Replaced the part
I have a 1999 VW golf 1.8 GTI - the part i needed was :
Part No. 1J0 711 256

removed the airbox
and then took the nut off the other gear cable to give me better access

after that it was pretty simple, fits on easily.
