wishbones track rod ends
« on: 01 June 2012, 12:24 »
hi guys,

i need to replace the wishbone and track rod end ball joint on the offside of my gti as there knackered and causing a knocking noise.
is it worth replacing the nearside ones at the same time too?

anybody have any links where you can pick them up as a set maybe?

cheers guys

also just remembered a car dealer friend of mine told me the other day that he has a mk4 golf gti 2.0l in his yard, would the wishbones and track rod ends be the same? i take it they would?

yeah mate they should be fine to fit on yours,
If I do either side I always replace the opposite site the same time tbh.

yep that's same way i think aswell, but i dunno if it'd be worth taking them from both sides from the 2l gti he has or getting new ones?
suppose its just worth a look over there to see what condition there in and how much he wants for em!

why do you need new wishbones? Buy new track rod ends, as said above it's not worth using second hand ones. The track rod ends are completely separate from the wishbones so the rattling may not be related

I'd also replace in pairs

technically i don't need new wishbones but they offside rear bush in the wishbone is knackered.because it looks like both wishbones have never been replaced i'd thought i'd replace them as when you buy them new they come wish all new bushes already installed which is less aggro and its just for piece of mind i know there brand new.
as for the offside track rod end ball joint, its also worn and needs replacing.
both were advisory items on my mot so i'm going to replace everything for piece of mind.
turns out the knocking noise has now dissapeared so far since i've installed some new spigot rings on the front of the car?
must've been knocking on something but didn't show any signs of wear anywhere.
the car dealer i mentioned i know pretty well and he said if i take my car up on tuesday i can swap over the wishbones and track rod ends from the 2l gti he has with mine free of charge as he is breaking the car.
so stuck between buying all new for piece of mind or getting it for free and solving it as a cheap fix? :undecided:
