With a budget of 7k ignore a mk4 or bora, get something current. Something with a 2.0tdi engine like in the A3 or GTTDI etc. As mentioned above, dsg if your lazy and it really is awesome.

Seat altea - This is my next toy on the list

But anything with the 2.0TDI engine is where I would look with that much cash - A3, Leon, Asspat, A4 etc...
