Whats your budget??

Id be looking at MK5 or A3's or even a Leon as they will offer a significant upgrade in terms of handling and even drivability.  The 140 engine is a cracking bit of kit

About 8k, i definitely dont like the MK5 for the size and interior. I like the sound of the 140 but to be honest if i were to go for one it would have to be the 170!

If you shop around you might be able to pick up a 170 in Leon or Octavia flavour; or even A4 form.  Adam bought his S-Line A4 for about 8K I think  :undecided:

Just remember with the 170 that they suffer from injector issues so if you do get one get it booked in ASAP under the recall if they haven't already been done

Drives as nice as a BMW 1 series, I think not!

I own both, so i would say that makes my opinion a valid one. my golf is 6 years older and i would take that on a journey before i picked the bm keys up. Bmw is a nice car, but ride is harsher, worse on fuel and driving position is to far left. In fact is for sale shortly!!!

Think what Tim means is it handles so much better than the mk4 which it does.

I don't own a 1 series but my old man does/has (118d M and 120d M) and have drive them for many many miles. Yes the ride is harsher than a standard mk4, fuel wise its the same as my 150 and the driving position is down to the driver. Seats are much better in the bmw, engine is quieter than vw's, not as torqie but pulls right to the redline smoothly and will out pro form any mk4 on twisty roads with ease.
I often wonder why people never expect sarcastic comments from me - they're the only reason I speak...

I'm wanting a 1 series coupe rather than the hatchback, not sure if they'll handle any different mind?

I love the quality of the Bm but i just think the mk4 is as good a car for no where near the same money  :undecided:
My mam has a Bm 5 series and i've got to say the pedals are definitely off to one side, i was faffing on with the seat for ages but theres no way i could get it right, hope the 1 series doesnt have this!
