a nice mk1 by the way, but just a note, noticed some rust coming through on the inner wings (when/if you open the bonnet, follow the line of the wing up towards the windscreen, there is a cavity below the screen - the outer walls of that) and also i had a quick peek at the sills which also have some surface patches which if caught now-ish will be ok.

Quite refreshing to see a young professional female with some taste in cars! 

If you need it servicing or anything dont hesitate to ask!

Oh and a gear-linkage bush kit from GSF in Farnham is about £15 which will sort out your soggy box (oooh errr missus  ) 

Just to clarify - was the fuse for the fuel pump relay (later spec relay?)

I had noticed that the gearbox was a bit sloppy, but put it down to the fact I had been driving a delightful* 1.2 Punto rental car for a while with smooth everything prior to buying the golf.

If a gear linkage kit is only 15pounds then having that changed could be your next task, if you like. 

I am not sure what to do about the rust, bearing in mind that I anticipate heading back to the states in about 3 months and will be selling it.  Have to have a ponder on that one.

I believe it has been serviced recently, but I will check the oil condition and have that done in addition to the gear linkage change.
Oh, I dont think I can, its a two person job to open that bonnet, remember?
