Can I ask why you need the rear wheels alinging? (it's a solid axle and unless it's bent they should be in the correct position)

b.t.w all mk3's have rear wheels that sit in the rear aches different! (one side normally sits 5-10mm more outward due to vw's early 90's quality control )

Can the axle be shifted on its mounts centrally then? I can't remember seeing any tolerance when I've done rear bushes.

If the mounts are fine the axle has to be central, worn bushes and it could be all over!

The rear axle mounts can be moved where they bolt to the chasis, they say to remove the rear beam using the bush bolts to avoid miss aligning it, so yes there is a certain amount of alignment in the rear beam, but its not tracking as such.
