Thanks for some very good advice,alot to think about this week gonna try oil replacement first with a treatment(just a soon as me 17 drain bolt remover arrives) then if no better on to the linkage. the joys of owning a 22year old car. What fun getting greasy again (lol)

Just noticed some gearboxes have a weight mine doesn't what does this do and do I need one?

its to improve the 'feel'. Ive just fitted one, the difference is marginal, but selection is easier and a tad more positive. Could just be the placebo effect though  :laugh:

It was only invented for the cable shift MK3 gearbox.

Its invented for rod change, not cable change. It was something vw did on the mk3 020 boxes. it noticeable for the 1st 5 seconds then you're used to it after that really.
