surely adjusting the cable now will make no difference will it ?

Of course it will - if it's just the cable thats stretched...

Adjust and see what happens..

If it still slips then you know it's the clutch...

if the cable is stretched it will make it loose wich will not make it slip if the cable was tight it would be like pushing the clutch in slightly wich would make it slip as i said above cables dont shrink

How come then that my cable needs adjusting every 6-12 month then??

Cable still wants to be adjusted before you can rule out that the clutch needs doing...

how do you adjust your cable ? do you tighten it or loosen it ?does your clutch slip if you dont adjust it ?
not saying your wrong it just dosnt make sense as if you push in the clutch it basically slips that mutch that you can change gear releasing the clutch stops it slipping giving you drive so if you tighten the cable it will slip more cause this willbe like pushing in the clutch

to test if your clutch is knackered put it in gear put your hand brake on full while stood still rev the engine and slowly release the clutch if it stalls or pulls away dragging the rear wheels or wheelspins then your clutch is fine if it revs up and you dont move you clutch is nackkered
