Throttle body- easy change?

Have been asked by a mate at work to look into a throttle body swap on her Mk3 1.4 CL.  I have seen it described as a "bolt off, bolt on" job. Is this correct?!

Part is about £157 from GSF, or less from breakers, but she is being quoted some outrageous amount of labour by garage. 

Any tips much appreciated! :smiley:

There is a how to guide for removing the throttle body and cleaning it, the guide is for1.8 16v mk2, but most models are similar.
What is the problem with it? why does it need replacing?

Thanks for that.  Apparently the revs keep dying and it is cutting out at idle.  Has been on a VAG diagnostic apparently and that was the recommendation from them, but matey is a little strapped so thought of paying main dealer prices is a little too much....

it wont be the throttle body. my mate has the same prob with his wee 1.4 seat. it's the MAF sensor on them that goes. wont show on diagnostics either!

MAF sensor is a common problem. They do seem to deteriorate over time/use and the only solution appears to be replacement. My Dad's Audi A6 TDI was suffering with appaulling acceleration, especially in 2nd gear and generally underperforming. I tried cleaning the MAF, which didn't help. £70 later and new MAF it totally transformed the car. Goes like a rocket now :smiley:

He did take it to Martins at Basingstoke and the Audi technician plugged his lappy in and they went out for a drive. The technician told Dad to accelerate in certain gears and at certain times and he was able to confidently diagnose that it was the MAF. As Gambit says, it won't come up in a diagnostic check but if they do that they can prove it 100%.

Thanks for that, guys.  Will keep an eye on the MAF as well.  Apparently the problem has mysteriously cleared up since the diagnostic at the main dealer....????

Theres a sticky post on here somewhere that describes how to strip them down and clean the electrical contacts...
