.............speed limit needs to be raised.  Modern cars have come on a long way since the limits were placed back in the 60's.

But modern drivers have got worse

I do agree though that the motorway limit should be raised to 80.

It's less about the cars, more about peoples concentration and awareness whilst driving.  A sole driver paying full attention driving smoothly and allowing adequate space at 90 mph is far less of a risk than somebody half asleep at 58mph in the slow lane or a parent very heavily distracted by kids in the back.

I once had to break from speed in the outside lane with a good controlled firm and progressive breaking maneuver for stationary traffic from 90mph, with the obvious check in the rear view mirror to see the mum in the Picasso playing with something in the back seat for the child.  I decided to tuck into the barrier and watch as she slid up the inside all locked up after her brown trouser realization moment.

Germany has a couple of "no-speed-limits" highways. How are the accident rates on those compared to the ones limited to 70 MPH?
How much is the speed limit actually dropping the accident rates?

Not sure on numbers, but they have a lot less accidents on the auto bahn than we do. Only downside is when they have an accident it's generally fatal!

Ouch Kenny.

I only manage 145mph on my recent trip to Berlin, too much traffic.

I also got flashed twice by various cameras on the normal roads, brings the total in Europe to around 12.

Hope they don't catch up with me

@GolfTi: They will get you as sure as night follows day. They'll throw you in a clink full of butch, frustrated, deviant  murderers. But don't fret. I'll bail you for a favour or two.

I've got French/Dutch/Belgian/German parking tickets going back 20 years.
I've been caught by the traffic cameras many times. Tickets don't get sent to the UK.

If the local police stop you then its a fine but no points on your UK licence.

I only drive fast when it is safe to do so.

Clean UK licence since I got it.
