My mate has a 2ltr compact and I've consistently
beaten
monstered him with an elderly 16v mk2
Although this will most probably change when he finishes his E30 project...
I'd keep the mk4 personally.

As many say, keep the Golf. A 3 series compact is just a poor man's thingy extension. Wreaks of fail.
