No midrange?
« on: 12 April 2011, 15:12 »
My current little install is as follows:
JVC cd headunit
front dash speakers deleted
Front JBL components (gto's i think) and tweeters with crossovers in standard door pods (not amped)
Kenwood tornado sub in ported box running off a alpine V12 amp.
rear door speakers disconnected

My problem is i have lots of poor quality treble, plenty of bass but no mid bass from the comps, just a bit of vibration.

Would i benefit much from sound deadening the front doors, amping the comps (i only have a sh!tty little amp spare) and mounting them on wooden bases in the doors rather than the standard plasic mounts?

I don't want to go to all the effort of the above if the sound won't improve. Or do i just need better kit? bearing in mind i bought a lot of this stuff a fair few years back.

I listen to a variety of music from the jam to daft punk so prefer sound quality over extreme volume.

your advice would be appreciated.

cheers mellow

Sound deadening doors and mdf baffle (as big as possible) will help with midbass a lot. But the speakers will only be receiving 10-15wrms from the hu so won't be massively bassy anyway.

90% of the quality of a car stereo is down to installation mate. What you've got is perfectly good. Although I think you'll want the fronts amped to get the sound you want.

so if i mount the comps on mdf secured to the metal of the doors and sound deaden the doors this will help but i need to amp them to get the best out of them? i've got a little shark? amp that i could use for the time being so will this be better than nothing? plus i only have one output on my hu so will have to split that? i can always do the above and use the crap amp til i can afford to upgrade.

also i have the tweeters installed in the curve around the top of the speaker pod in the door (standard mk 3) facing diagonally up if that makes sense? is this ok or would they be better behind the dash grills?

What are the specs of the shark amp?

Model no, rms rating, amp rating any of them will do. We'll have a look.

I always, always mount my fronts on mdf screwed to the door skin.

Put the tweeters on the a pillars mate. I generally point them at the mirror. I hid my crossovers in where the oem tweeters were.
