Check your air inlets and maf. When u disconnect the maf it will still cut out but if it runs much better, that could be ur problem. I had it when I was fiddling with my airbox, and the air inlet pipe came loose from the throttle body. Worth a check anyway!

+1 had exactly the same syptoms, started out just cutting out in traffic and at junctions ect, slowly got harder to start when left for afew days, untill one morning she wouldnt start at all, i checked for spark with a plug in the HT lead, nothing! i had fuel delivery as the plugs were wet so wasnt going to be crank sensor as that cuts both spark and fuel. Fitted coil and she started up on the button, no problems since!

167 is the fuel pump relay, this is supposed to be warm.

If your car is a little spluttery when it cuts out, its likely the Crank sensor. It's a b!tch to change, but it is worth taking out and inspecting at least. When i removed mine all the wires were blended into one and i'm surprised the car even started.  Changed for a genuine replacement part and problem solved (£65 and fitted myself). I have a good photo of my f**ked crank sensor here. http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=172870.msg1644742#msg1644742

I also had a cut out problem where the car would just cut out dead as if I just turned the key off. No spluttering, just dead. It usually took about 2-10  mins to restart and it would do it every 20 mins or so. After it cuts out and wont start again, can you hear the fuel pump prime (a humming from the rear of the car for around 2 seconds) I changed the ECU relay (number 30) and so far, problem solved. Was £11 from europarts, and I think £20 for genuine. It's a very cheap and easy to switch part to try first. If no fix, just switch back and sell relay online.

Hope this helps

Btw a problem with the coilpack will not show up as a fault on the computer. As i said before,if it is the problem you will only defo know when it completely packs up.
