Coaxial OR Components??
« on: 19 February 2011, 16:46 »
Right, so ive read all the stickies, asked a few questions of my own and had them answered and I thought i knew what i needed to upgrade the speakers on my MK2.

I was thinking I wanted some 13cm (5.25") components for the front to upgrade the stock door speakers and tweeters and then I wanted to get a new head-unit as mine is just CD/FM and I want aux-in or iPod interface or similar. I read that a good head unit and some decent components would more than likly be enough without going down the amp and sub route so I thought id try that first and add an ampped sub later if i felt the need.

When asking for a bit more advice in the shop it was suggested that if my stock tweeters in the dash were still working fine (eg not sounding like someone farting through a sheet of A4) then I would be better off just replacing the door speakers with some coaxials as id get better sound all round with the extra mid-tones from the door speakers. The guy I was speaking to suggested that it would be mostly bass and low notes from the components.

I also asked about how the quality and power output of the head-unit would effect the sound and he said as long as it was a fairly new unit it would be putting out 50w and that would be enough really, made it sound like as long as the head-unit wasnt ancient the price/type i went for would have little effect.

Are either of the above incorrect in anyway? All the previous advice ive received has been based around components and a 'good' head-unit, which I took to be more than a £50 pioneer unit? but maybe ive mis-interpreted things?

Im pretty fed up with the few CD's I have in the car + the crappy sound quality when I crank it up a bit. I really want to get on with this job but want to make sure im going about it the right way. Any head-unit and speaker combo's would be gratly appreciated.

cds clutter interiors, lol, an ipod connection, or usb stick connection head unit is the way, but its up to you if youre willing to sit at your laptop for hours downloading it all, lol

components are better than coaxials, however coaxials are cheaper, all depends on your budget, 2 pairs of decent speakers amped up will sound mint, but wont give lots of bass, the cheapest comps ive found is the vibe slick 60s, which i have, although my mate has the slick 50s which are the size youve mentioned that you require, and tbh, they arent too bad for the money

2-way coaxials are more for limited space and funds, comps for sure if you have somewhere to house the crossover and tweeter

i dont know what the mk2 interiors are like so i cant comment on that
