« on: 09 January 2011, 17:54 »
i have just swapped a front spring and shocker over on my passat as a spring snapped on new years eve
the spring i removed has one white mark and three brown marks and the spring i have fitted has one white mark and two brown marks

The markings are so you know the spec of spring being fitted, different engines or sport pack etc.

one car is a 20v 1.8t sport and the other one a 20v 1.8 sport which is why i expected them to be the same springs. then i saw the different markings and wondered what the difference was between the two

I would guess heavier duty maybe, the turbo will not be adding much so should be ok to use as a pair however.

it is the using them as a pair im having a problem with. my car has the 1 white and 3 brown stripes as standard but as i had a snapped spring i didnt want to strip the shocker down to change a spring so i got a strut from a scrapper with 1 white and 2 brown stripes. ideally i would like to have both springs the same but i dont want to pay £60 for 2 second hand springs

It always better to fit shocks and springs in pairs.
