am i running rich?

Chaps

Going from searches on here I think my 98 8v is running rich.

ok so these are the symptoms:-

- intermittent poor starting eg. struggles to idle, ok if given some revs for 10 secs or so. Oil light comes on briefly sometimes when it does this

- notice petrol smell more when this happens. Soon goes after car warms up

- renewed spark plugs recently, checked them last weekend and seem to have 'blacker'deposits than would be expected for only a month old!

This seems to have started occurring since I replaced plugs, HT leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm. If I had put dizzy cap slightly out of line would this account for it maybe?

It idles less roughly than before I did the service. I think it is idleing at a higher rpm than before now, but I have also recently switched to Super unleaded and the idle seemed to have got slightly higher since I first put that in the tank.

cheers

The mixture is controlled by the ecu so if it is running rich you might find the temp sender is playing up and leaving it on the cold start map longer.

disconnect plug to lambda probe, if its better chances are you need a new one :)

also clean out the throttle body till its shiny to rule this out, and look it over carefully for vacuum leaks asnd splits in the inlet piping

hmmm... had a look for the lambda plug today, couldn't find it! Sorry, being dim, but what is it near? Not sure where the rear engine mount bracket was. Anyone got a pic?

look right down back of engine, the rear mount is what holds rear of engine to the subframe, cant miss it. its near the chassis leg and steering rack. should be a 4 pin plug sat down there somewhere
