Blue Smoke on Startup
« on: 24 January 2005, 23:49 »
Hey guys, pretty new here, had my 1991 Golf Clipper for 6 months now, its not been on the road yet as im sorting a few bits and bobs for summer

Anyway, hopefully someone will be able to help me.

The problem I have is, my car pumps out a cloud of blue smoke on startup, but only on startup, and usually only if it hasnt been used for a day.

It was fine when I bought it, and it only started smoking after I used an engine flush.
Oh and I also get a top end rattle now, which usually dissapears as the engine heats up.

Any idea's how to fix it, and what do I need to buy/change.

Thanks

That sounds like your valve guide oil seals are leaking/worn. I recently did Hazels Audi without removing the head. Only took a couple of hours
Doesn't sound like yours are too bad just yet, but they will get progressively worse.

also the rattle could be worn valve lifters when the oil flush went through it it could of shifted the sludge which was helping to keep it sealed.
i am assuming here that the clipper has hydrolic tappets, rich is that right?

Yeah 91 will be hydraulic. As Carrie says, the oil flush has probably shifted some muck and its now causing the lifter to leak down through the valve guide oil seal, hence oil on start up and rattly lifter. Also, just a thought, if you did a flush, I presume you have now done an oil and filter change. Have you fitted an oem oil filter with the NRV fitted?

Yeah definately the valve stem oil seals!!

When you have the head off also check the guides and valve stems for wear!!

I presume NRV stands for Non Return Valve ??? If so, some one else mentioned this, although Im not sure.

Yep, i did a full oil and filter change, I got the filter from Eurocarparts, i think its made by HENGST ?????

I'll buy another if this helps ???

Probably not necessary. Have a look at Stuarts reply here:-
