Engine Mounts
« on: 29 August 2003, 11:18 »

Hi there, my Mk1 is developing a knock, when you pul off and 'rock' the engine by coming on and off the gas when going along, think its an engine mount . Any other things I should check and also how do I check the engine mounts??? I know the big one at the front is brand new.

Put the bonnet up, rev the car on the clutch and drive across a car park while you get a mate to watch the engine. Another thing maybe to look it is the exhaust.

That front one that you have replaced, is it adjusted correctly? The primary purpose of that front one is to counter the engine rotation. However I guess its going to struggle to do that if one of your other mounts is completely knackered.........check underneath where the gearbox mount is bolted to the chassis.......I had to change that at the same time as doing my front one.

The mount has two bolt holes that are slotted, allowing you to adjust the mount up or down. I set mine by pulling the metal part down onto the rubber so that it limits the amount of movement when the engine is pulling. Had no probs with this method. Check the one by the timing belt, when I took my engine out, it was well worn ::). Good luck, Steve.

Yep its totally different to a MK2. On a Mk2 that front one is actually a mount, not an anti engine roatation device as it is on a Mk1. Ask MK1_BOY and 87_PROJECT........I nearly dropped a Mk2 engine on my head because I assumed that mount did the same..........duh!!!!!
You never stop learning............

Yep, the Audi got a similar thing on it, but its a vibration damper rather than an actual mount.
