As for the oil, there will be a few suggestions but I've always gone with VW's Quantum silver, you might be best to use Quantum gold on a mk4 but not sure
If the garage you take it to allows you to do this then buy the oil and oil filter and pay for the labour, the garage I use allows me to do this but I've got a bit of a season ticket with them.
