Dash Oil service indicator
«

hello all,
hope everyone is having a good new year.
just a quickie....i have the oil service indicator warning flash up on my dash at the moment suggesting i need an oil change. however, i purchased my golf about 8months ago in may 04 from a subaru dealer who presumably carried out an oil change when they serviced the car for me. i'm pretty sure its just a case of reseting this warning display, but is there any way i can check the consistency/quality of the oil in the car visually to see if a change is due?? i don't get my head under the bonnet too much to be honest apart from usual bits and bobs. could i see from the oil on the dipstick if the change is required?? the next service is due in may but i don't want to wait until then if my car needs oil now?!!
thanks all.

Why take the risk
If you are unsure about the oil then get the oil and filter change. How many miles have you done since May ? I know this might be over kill on my part but I get the oil changed on mine every 4000 miles to keep it running sweet. Don't kid yourself that the dealer did a full service with oil change either, I'm never too convinced myself, or am I just a cynical old git !

Changed mine on Saturday, did air filter at the same time and new sump plug & washer. Every 5000 miles without fail. Then reset the service indicator myself. Description of how to do that is here >>

Took me a few attempts, not entirely sure the steps are right, but I've managed to reset mine 3 times. I kept slipping though and my clock ended up 6 hours fast
edit: edited because i can't spell cLock, and the swear filter is strange.

Ohh.. if it's the beepy one on the centre display (thats a technical term - beepy- ) then no, think you need vagcom to reset that. The method i gave is just for the LCD display/mile counter & trip meter.

sorry about 'swearing' in the earlier message guys...didn't consider the word for my back-side to be that taboo, i will be more polite from here on !! in terms of the oil change i'll prob get someone else to sort it for me, i've seen adverts for places like kwik fit which look reasonable, will those guys use a fully synthetic oil if i request it? and whats the best brand of oil to choose in your opinion?? we own a family garage that could sort it, just a question of finding the time !!!
cheers everyone
