Noisy heater
« on: 13 August 2003, 16:28 »
Hi, does anyone know if there's a way of quietening the heater fan on a MK2?

On speed 1 it's an annoying rumble, 2 it's an ear piercing squeal, and 3 causes my eardrum to puncture and start bleeding! Ok, that's last one was a slight exaggeration, but it's annoying as hell whichever setting I use.

A new fan unit from VW is stupid money, and WD40 only lasts a few days, it's a lot of work for a few days peace and quiet.

TIA

Pip

Yeah, did that before, the original one stopped altogether, this one was ?25 and they don't guarantee them not being noisy!

Think you might have to take the hit in the wallet. Any measure you take to quiten your current one is only going to be temporary. You could try '87_PROJECT', I gave him one out of my old Mk2 that was OK............he may be willing to pass it on.

noisey heater? I've got one of those too :D
usually when you turn it up to 3 it stops making the noise, but now it just gets worse. Time to buy another from somewhere.

I think the problem is that water leaks into the interior fan and corrodes part of the spindle. Hence the excess noise.

?10 from the scrappy. That Jetta with a Fiesta on it's roof won't be needing it anymore. Ahh, bliss. No more whining now :D

I would try lubbing the spindle up first, I would imagine there must be a bearing in there that has gone dry with the heat passing through. Use some silicone spray or something similar.

Silicon spray or grease on the spindle will shut it right up, mine started doing that a few weeks ago.
