Retarded Volkswagens ?

I'm not suggesting it is retarded, but occasionally when i accelerate in my 8V, the engine bogs down as though the distributor is not advancing or as if the choke was on, then all of a sudden whoomp away it goes.
This doesn't happen all the time but when it does it's annoying, so anyone got any suggestions before i lift the bonnet to fiddle with it on christmas day?

could be either petrol or ignition side!

check for loose wires.....


if all look ok...... you could try a high rev down the local 70mph road!

but make sure the engine is hot and your oil level is ok before doing so!
