« on: 28 March 2010, 09:19 »
hi all after a long time away from vw ownership ive got my hands on a mk 3 estate diesel and she has a couple of issues 1=it dont lock !!! the key turns in the barrel but doesnt engage on either of the front doors and the drivers side wont even let me lock it by pushing it manually and 2= the rear electric windows dont work

any ideas of what i should look at first

cheers all

The locking issue: The paddles between the barrel and the lock mechanism have snapped, you need to remove the door handles and replace the paddles. The reason the drivers door won't lock is so that you don't lock your keys in the car. If you close the door and climb over from the passenger side it should lock, although if you lock both front doors you won't be able to get back in the car?? So probably best to get them fixed first!!

The electric windows issue: Are you using the front double switch or the two individual switches on the rear doors? The double switch on the dash has a push button which 'locks' the rear windows so that children can't open them etc, so if they're 'locked' then you won't be able to open them using the two individual switches in the rear. If they don't work from the switch on the dash, they could have knackered motors/regulators, or it could be a broken wire between the door and car

If the passenger one makes a noise then I reckon the cables on the regulator have frayed or snapped. The drivers side one could be anything from a broken wire, to a knackered motor, or once again, broken cables. Best thing to do really is to pop the rear door cards off and investigate :)

I've found a lot of scrappies would rather sell the handles complete (meaning you'd have a different key for locks + ignition). I don't know if VW sell the repair kits but they sell them on ebay..

vw do a door barrell repair kit for all locks!not bad money.not very nice to fit ,need 3 hands and patience of a saint! but when done do work.motors for electric windows do play up when not used, try going down and hitting the motor at the same time, does work on most models.or check for power at the motor.
