disconnected, deffo sounds like summat aint right!  Might be worth takin rocker cover off and checkin where cams point at tds, also remove the cam sprocket and make sure woodruff key is there

right,checked the cam timming and thats fine so i had another play with the dizzy timing and tick over/co but this time by ear and seems to run alot better but still struggles after 5100rpm.would it be worth me taking it to tsr and having a power run on there rr and see what they say,would they be able to tell me whats wrong or what it needs from a power run as when ive read in fast ford when they do there dyno days the bloke who does it says a comment on how the cars running and what it could do with.thanks parrot

how do the vaccum lines to the fpy/throttle body look? check the vac line to the fpr is connected to the vac nipple on the passenger side of the tbody and the other one is blanked off.  I take it you've given it a full service?

maybe you have a fuel delivery problem, pull the plug to the main pump and turn the key 1 click, make sure the in-tank pump primes ok.
