If it is coming out from the bottom of the engine. I don't think that would be your headgasket.

Took it to the garage this morning, told em what was wrong and where i the water was coming from.  They said it was most likely a crack in the thermostat housing, something quite common as the plastic warps under the heat and pressure.  Just a bit of a fiddly job because of the VR6 engine but if i can get the part it will be about 2 hours labour charge.  Probably looking around about 100 quid.  not to bad to be honest, and i'm hoping that will solve the problem.

Have noticed that if i keep my revs low i don't really get a leak at all, done about 60 miles this morning, a mixture of town and motorway driving and no leak that i can see, water level hasn't really dropped either.  just gotta keep an eye on it until I can get the problem fixed.

Turns out it was the thermostat housing.  One of the seals had completely warped and melted.  Changed the whole part, which only cost about 15 quid from GSF and fit it with a mate who is a mechanic, rather than paying for the garage.  No leak any more and problem solved.

just gotta sort out my small oil leak.  Probably looking at a new sump pan, looks like the car has bottomed out several times in the past and the sump has possibly cracked and then been welded up. Simple enough job i think, just need to make another trip to GSF and hope they have the relevant parts.
