Golf 8v Tyre size and pressures

I recently bought a second golf, a '96 Mk3 2.0 8v.   It is running 205x50x15 tyres. What is the recommended pressure compromise for best ride and handling?

The tyres are currently running 30psi all round, this seems a bit hard on the rear as it is quite hard over the bumps, but this could be the suspension.

What is the correct tyre size and will these tyre sizes affect the speedo reading?

They are the standard tyre size for your motor...I think prior to 1995 the tyres were 195s. Pressures should be 30psi for the fronts and 28 for the rears. Thats what it says on the fuel filler flap and seems to work ok for me.

Thanks for the reply, I have already dropped the rears by 2psi, so looks like i accidentally got it right.

hmmm, I was going to ask this question as my Gti was fitted with (by the previous owner) 205/50/15 on the front axle and 195/50/15 on the rear axle.

THe Golf is a MkIII Gti 8v on an L reg - 1993

Have you checked all of the tires ?

Its could be that the car has had a smack and some previous owner has bought a wheel from the scappers.

The tires should be the same width all the way round the car .
