Dont listen to winrya there about checking when needs service. What you did there causes the service now to be displayed, because its the start of one of the ways to cancel service light. Check you last bill from AC, if it says you had longlife service done then its not due till next year but if time&distance then you are due now.

Mine did this too, came up saying Service Now, but never comes up saying service now normally when i turn it on, seems odd, as surely it should tell you everytime its turned on?

There was a known 'bug' in the SID computer for a limited timescale of VWs (it didn't affect Audis), and this was known to give erratic operation of the SID.

And don't forget, if you happen to press (even accidentally ) any of the buttons for the trip computer (either on the MFSW or on the end/bottom of the wiper stalk) - then any non-Priority 1 warnings will be immediately cancelled.

Ok ok all very interesting this debate..... I can't say one way or the other about the merits of t&d vs ll.

Then read this very helpful and informative thread: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=65779

Clearly more servicing has to be welcomed. However for the record I don't drive hard, in fact most of the time I'd be as well with a sh!troen c1.

You don't just need to drive it hard.  If you do short journeys, then that can also disqualify you from LL regime.  Read that link above

It's on LL just now, it's only done circa 9000 miles since the last service.

Well, that clearly indicates that the LL regime is NOT suitable - due to your driving 'pattern'.

But just to clarify that yours isn't one of the cars which had the bug in the SID software, ask your stealer to confirm that the latest version of software is installed.  BTW, what model year is your car (the 10th digit of the VIN will tell you), because, and don't hold me to ransome over this comment - but I think it was around m/y2005 which had the faulty SID software.  All cars after that have the correct SID software.

I will ask a cost but last time the robbin barstewards took me for £310!!!!

I think all VW stealers (and Audi too) still do a price match.  Get some other written quotes from other garages - even try you local Halfrauds or Nationwide Autocentre (state you need a written quote for your business accounts or sommat similar ) - make sure the quote is broken down into labour and parts (just in case there is any doubt that they are not genuine parts prices) - then go back to AC waving the cheapest quote under their noses.  Buy the actual parts yourself (5 litres of oil, sump plug, oil filter, pollen filter, and one litre of brake fluid), and ask for a discount.  Even if they only give you 5%, it is better than paying full whack, and you can be sure they use the genuine LL oils.

Oh, and you may be right about high prices by AC - look at this thread: http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=79964

So I take it that my holding down the mileage button gave a false result? If on ll then why did it show service due?

Absolutely NOT.  That is just pure BS.  Read your owners manual.

TT youre bang on, I need to change my schedule to T&D.

I plan to keep my car for at least the next 3 years anyway, so I want it in tip top condition.

I contacted AC and they agreed that this prompt was an oversight.

I have decided to delay the service until September or so, then the car will be 4 years old and will also be due the DSG service.

At that point I will move to T&D and get the lot done in a one-er and thereby killing to stones with one bird as it were.

Had my brakes checked recently and they are like new.

Delaying until September also gives me a chance to squirrel away some cash to pay for a major service and the dsg service.

Currently they want £240 for major service, and I am waiting on a price for the DSG service on top.....will modify the post when I hear for info.  I expect a similar amount.

Let the fun begin........Red Gti, full colour coding, DSG, Xenons, Winter pack, Lux pack, Highline, Sat Nav, Sunroof, Leather, Milltek, ABT rear valance, Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics....pescaras :-)

My dealer called me too. Car is a year old and has done 7500 miles. However as the oil light just popped on and required a quick top up, and I've got free 3 year servicing anyway, I figure I might as well book it in and let them change the oil and wot not.

Cheers TT! its clearly in the owners manual and what ive been using for 3 years.  1st year mine was on LL and i used that method then and from then its been on TT and has always worked.  For example mine says service in 343 miles or in 46 days.  Thats a year since the last service and I'm on 9,657 miles

As a little of an aside, I recently bought my GTI from Gilder VW in Sheffield and they had put it on T&D while it was in their hands.

I suspect this was due to the lower cost of the oil though rather than an comment on the relative merits of the two service regimes.

Exactly.  So you know T&D makes more sense.

Or do I read sommat between the lines - like you beat them into submission!

Hmmmmm . . . that is another six months away!  I do understand your logic of wanting to get the services tied in to the cars 'birthdays', particularly for the 'time-only' operations such as the BFC - but six months after the SID has pinged is just too long IMHO.  So if you did wait till September, how long will it be from your previous service?

Currently they want £240 for major service, and I am waiting on a price for the DSG service on top.....will modify the post when I hear for info.  I expect a similar amount.

Just make sure they only charge for 5.5 litres of DSG fluid - because some sneaky stealers are charging for the full 'factory-fill' 7.2 litres.

My dealer called me too. Car is a year old and has done 7500 miles.

So the T&D regime would be best suited to your personal conditions too.

However as the oil light just popped on and required a quick top up,

Yikes  - don't you know where your bonnet release and dipstick are?   You really should not rely on the oil warning light - you really need to be pulling the dipstick every week, or at the very latest, every month (with your limited mileage).

and I've got free 3 year servicing anyway, I figure I might as well book it in and let them change the oil and wot not.

Interesting . . .  Usually, these 'free 3 year servicing' deals usually only use the LongLife regime, which usually means just one service in that three year period.  They are such a con, IMVHO.

You may be right on the oil costs.  However, from January 2009, ALL VW (and other VAG) stealers must now use the more expensive LongLife3 oils, even if the car is on T&D servicing.  So that cost of oil difference will now be eliminated.
