Bl**dy sump plug
« on: 28 February 2009, 14:09 »
I cannot budge the thing...

I've got the car on axle stands so cant get leverage on it to use a large breaker bar.

Anyone got any ideas ?

Carefully tap the hex face a few times with a hammer, then use a 6 point impact socket, but use a normal 24" breaker bar.

Or you could try either heat from a hot air or blow gun - carefully with the latter.  Or maybe get a can of 'Freeze Release' spray.

If you use an impact gun on the sump, then it is likely you could actually rip open your sump!

Dont use the impact wrench !!!

2 spanners hooked together

or

A piece of tube on the end of a rachet ( spelling )

It shouldnt be that tight anyway whoever put that on is a bucher.

You soaked it with a good penetrative fluid?  Long breaker bar with a socket or heat should do it. ;)

this is the very simple solution but all i did with a tight sump plug was get a decent strength
spanner, some tape to hold it in place then lay on your back and kick it as hard as you can!!

worked quite well with mine, the other trick is open the door and hold on the sill to keep the car
on the stands whilst you boot it.
a work in progress......someday i might think i'm happy with a car....maybe

so far: 40mm Gmax lowering kit, upper and lower S3 strut braces, pipercross panel filter, Smoothed air box and 18" Audi R8 reps

Thanks chaps.

Yeah Ivor I soaked it a few times with WD40 but it wouldnt budge. I took the easy option in the end after 2 hours spent wrapping my knuckles and drove to a local garage and got them to loosen it ! They managed it with a huge breaker bar in the end, I only had axle stands at home so couldnt get the leverage it seems.

Service all done now...new pollen/fuel/air/oil filters, synta-gold oil, new spark plugs and cleaned throttle body...the car certainly feels a bit better for it.

As the weather was nice I also managed to give it a good wash/clean and get the interior panels out (only broke one sun visor clip) and drop the roof lining to sort out the sunroof leak once and for all. It turned out to be a split in the front pipe on the drivers side sunroof drain so replaced that, jubilee clipped all 4 and flushed out the bleed nipples so hopefully I wont get a wet footwell again.

Didn't get time to fit my new steering wheel from Wazzzer...probably a good thing as I'm a bit worried about the airbag exploding in my face or me not doing the nut up tight enough and it coming of in my hand mid corner, LOL.

Next I want to turn my attention to the suspension...cant put my finger on it but something definatly doesn't feel right to me. It all looked ok when I had it in the air though ?

Once that's sorted I'm thinking about an R-Tech remap :)
