An interesting discussion with our fleet insurance salesman this morning.. apparently fitting any tyre brand/model/size other than what was originally supplied on the vehicle voids the insurance. Probably isn't the same with all insurance companies but worth a phonecall to check.

Lol sounds a bit crazy.  Vw like all other companies stick on what they can get the cheapest price on at the time so it would be rather difficult for any insurance company to prove they were not stock.  You will find contis, bridgestones, pirelli's and michelins on gti's from the factory.  Change the size e.g width and they might be able to play that game but most dont even look at the cars, elephant for example just get a report of damage from the garage that the car has been towed to.

Can see some logic though, performance car with shocking cheap tyres would make it a much more likely to slide out of control and crash it, likewise stopping distances are totally different but ...........

Yeah I did accuse him of just finding more excuses not to pay out on claims

mot-wise as long as the speed and weight ratings are okay then you're fine.. which should be the way insurance sees it too.

I have heard this too, though i dont think its the make/model of the tyre, it just has to be of the same specification or better i.e. if they are ZR rated and 'Extra Load' etc... they must be of the same spec to comply. It does make sense, if you put a £20 tyre from quickfit with a speed rating of 100mph on a GTI it is a bit of a recipe for disaster,
