I'm wondering which vw's use the rad's with the fillercap on the side so i can get rid of the plastic exspansion tank

are they straight swap on a 16v kr 89?

pretty sure you can still get them, will be a straight swap once you get the right rad hoses as a kr one is a bit narrower.  just make sure its a rad off a 1.8 model as they'll be a bit wider, which is what you'll need if fitting to a 16v!
