the easiest way of seeing if its a 2 speed is by pulling the plug of the back of the fan and count the connectors, 2 connectors is single speed, 3 connectors is dual speed.

helioshjohn i got a 89 16v too that gets that hot. i havent had any problems but i do put the heaters on if im in traffic cos i get paranoid. mine came with a small radiator with a single speed fan, im gonna change it all for a bigger rad when i can afford it. It seems stupid that this year 16v has a small rad? did yours have small bumpers on? it could be to do with that maybe

mark you still need to put the 3 dual speed switch in the rad you lazy sod. but i turn my heaters on aswell cos im well paranoid aswell

cool! there is an audi twin fan setup on ebay ready converted to fit a golf. would be cool.

the 16v radiator is more efficent than the 8v item, it is twin core rad

so you can have a big heavy 8v radiator or a smaller 16v rad that is still more than adequate for the job

my temp never goes above halfway no matter what.

the bloke i bought the car from had the rad replaced 6 months ago.
how can i tell if he had a proper one put on and not some dodgy pattern part?
are there any markings to look for or any way of checking?
