Hi,
You should have 3 wires upto the coil, an ignition live ( battery voltage - 12-14volts max ), the signal wire (centre) and a earth. Good way too check is to check battery voltage using a voltmeter across terminals, then check ignition live wire too coil between wire and battery earth terminal, this should match the battery voltage roughly, then put voltmeter between ignition live feed wire to coil and earth wire from coil and compare voltages, they should all be roughly the same and not above 14 volts. It may also be worth checking voltage across battery terminals with engine running, this will check if your alternator is not overcharging, the maximum voltage when running should be 14-14.5 volts maximum. normally it is around 13.5 - 14 volts.
Hope this helps.
Jochen.

yeah i cheacked them and it said 12.2 on both battery and the live wire on the coil, i have a volt meter in my piller pod an that says wen its jus engine running with no lights on the neddle is on the 14 but just a bit over but with lights on jus under 14 lol i was told by a mate there should be some sort of resisiter cant remember wat its called an that should stop over valtage for example if it only needed 6valts it would stop it from sending 14, is there anyeasy way of finding out were this resister is??otherwise it looks lik ill b emptying my wallet to vw 2 fix problem lol

cheers jochen for the advice!!!!

Hi again,

The coil should run at 12-14 volts, there is no resistor that I know of, and I have worked on VW since 1989 hahaha.....
May be it is worth checking your distributor cap and rotor arm condition? and king lead, as maybe they are bad and causing too much drain on the coil pack? either that or your just getting a batch of duff coils? what manufacturer are they from? is the earth strap ok that bolts too one of the securing bolts?

Hi,
Are you sure its the coil thats giving the problem? the speed sender ( common prob ) can cause it to cut out and also the fuel pump and e.c.u power relays are also known problem area's.
Hope the garage can get it sorted for you.
Jochen.
