They are fine.

I replaced my top mount a while ago and they were still the same distance before the swap.

A poor design on VW's side.

I dont think its a poor design i think it allows for movement within the mount

A rubber mount is supposed to allow for some movement, but when they have stretched that much they probably should be replaced.

i have this prob i have 2 golf mk3 gtis one has new shocks and the other one when i jack it up i can move the shock up and down by hand and i cant on ther other one i was thinkig top mounts
