Cam belt / Cam chain?????
« on: 03 September 2008, 10:39 »
Was just having a look about vagparts and seen a timing chain for the auq engine. (got an anni)
I thought it was a cam belt it had as i just had it in to get the cambelt and waterpump replaced. Anyone got any ideas? Only engine ive stripped down and built back up was a saxo 1.6 8v so it was probably a bit different, not even looked under the engine cover of the 20v

Im puzzled.     :undecided: Toyota use the chains as well as they are a lot more reliable than a belt and seldom ever need changed as they are kept lubricated by the engine oil in a sealed compartment as far as i know. When i got the anni back from getting the timing belt done the invoice had the part numbers and price for the cambelt kit. Then i seen on vagparts the chain is for the auq engine???

Some old Fords (Sierra's IIRC) used to use chains.

Don't forget you need to get tensioners & water pump done at the same time.

I think many cars use chains (mainly bigger engine german marques, like V12 BMWs and Merc etc.)

From my knowlege, all golfs use belts - but for some reason, i think the VR6 might not....but then I am sure that will be corrected by someone.

it's not a timing chain, you have a timing belt (cam belt) and a camshaft chain which is what your looking at, the cam chain is for DOHC (Double Over Head Cam) models and has a chain and tensioner to link the 2 cams together.  not just big german cars that have timing chains my 1993 mini cooper had one he he
