ticking sound

most likely to be a tappet on a 16v,    theres twice as meany to start ticking.   they normaly go quite once the oils warmed up but they can really make a noise

on a digi there were loads of different colour injectors fitted, with slightly different ratings but all interchangible.  if you can get me the vag or vw part number off one i can check.

I had this problem a month ago. Knocking sound from around front right wheel, had all pulleys checked, which were fine. Turns out it was the water pump. Had a new cambelt fitted whilst everything was off and it's quiet as a mouse.

Apparently the water pump bearings can go and rattle like a bag of bolts. Hope this helps.

Apparently there were two sounds, one was coming from the power steering pump and the other was from the water pump pulley. the mecanic changed the power steering pump and the noise is gone quieter but now i just need a pulley and i cant find one anywhere. i rang GSF, they dont do it, rang VW, they discontinued and the rest dont have in stock. went to the scrappies and they just have the 8valve engines, the pulley looked different. Does anyone have a spare one or know where to get one from???

if you really have no luck finding em, it might be worth upgrading to the MK3/later Passat/SEAT water/pass pump & alternator setup, bolts right on.  Any 8v/16v from 1.8 up will fit, the only issue is you need an ABF crank pulley which is reasonably hard to find unless you spend top dollar for a new one from the likes of BBM in America!

There are 2 types, the early setup where the alt just has a big spring underneath or the late/aircon setup which has a seperate tensioner wheel. Only difference between the 2 is the alternator, belt and the alternator bracket the rest of it is the same.

I know its unlikely but when I had a ticking on my first Golf it turned out to be pulley (dont know the propper name  ) that both the PAS and alt belt go on and it cost a b@stard fortune for a new one !

yeah its a slipper pulley on some models, if i ever had that id be upgrading, will cost less and you end up with a much better setup!

Sounds like a lazy hydro tappet to me....I had luck quietening one down by draining the oil & filling (then running for a few minutes) with flushing oil, harder to find in gallon tins now, mostly iccle cans of add in treatment.  Still, even an add in tin of engine flush may do the trick before treating her to fresh oil....carbon deposits can block the oil suply to the tappet causing it to not quite pump up propperly, causing a tick-(top of the engine half engine speed) flush may shift the blockage    Good luck!  Marc.
