Same Box, different ARB iirc. The 1.8driver will keep up with an 8V happily especially with a set of webbers on it but the fuel consumption is kak. I'd go with a GTI personally, the insurance won't be much different I'd have thought. You can buy mine if you like  its in the classifieds.

The driver is pretty much the same as a GTI, but without the GTI. Same suspension, same trim, same interior etc, etc. Lower insurance though and I would think that it is still very tunable. I would have thought that with the right cam, carb and exhaust set up, you could rival, if not exceed the power of a stock 8v GTI. I myself prefer a well set up sports carbed motor to an injected one although you will be paying for fuel.

Just having a look through some of my old car mags.

Autocar gave out this info for the MK2 Golf GTI 8v..........

0-60  9.2
Top speed  115mph
MPG  35.7

And Auto Express gave out this info on the MK2 Golf 1.8 Driver......

0-60  10.5
Top speed  112mph
MPG  32.0

If you need any more info let me know as I have a heap of info on both in my old car mags. Got a load of mags dating from 1988-94.

VW's advertised 0-60 figure for the 8v GTI was 8.3sec. Depends who you ask I suppose  :undecided:

Golf GTI: good enough as it is

what i want to know is how far off the pace is the driver to a 8v gti mk2

Don't forget the driver's brakes aren't as good either. The gti has discs all round, with the front being vented. The driver has rear drums and front solid discs. The fronts can be swapped for the vented discs and appropriate pads though.
The 1.8 driver has a front arb like the gti, but no arb, unlike the gti!

Parp! depends on the year of the 8v. Some came with rear discs, some didn't.

Edit: was luck of the draw, i know of a few that have drums on the back, oh and not all fronts were vented either, some were 239 solid discs.
