Fuel Lift pump or main pump
« on: 21 April 2008, 17:53 »
My Mk2 started making a buzzing noise, coming from the rear O/S of car. Have worked out it is prob the fuel pumps but which one as the lift pump is £25 and the main pump is £100. The car starts and runs OK sometimes, but has cut-out, feels restricted when booting it. Any Ideas which one guys and how easy r they to replace and How?

cheers

my opinion is buy the lift pump which is £25, if the problem isnt sorted then its the main pump.

Agreed, this is far more likely to fail and is relatively easy to change - I did mine at the road side.

If the buzzing stops when you have a full tank of fuel its most likley the lift pump thats at fault.

pull the plug from the main pump, turn the key 1 click.  If you hear the loud buzzing still or hear nothing at all, its lifty pump!

:embarassed: sorry if this is hijacking the thread but im working on a mates mk2 and this thread caught my eye

I havent checked power to the lift pump yet but the main pump is only getting 2volts? i thought the lift pump might be knackered and draining all the power, is that likely

If you can hear it more outside the car id say its the main pump, but if its buzzing it should be working, maybe a bit blocked. are you sure theres fuel in it? if in doubt bung a fivers worth in, it cant hurt

Mind did this, used to conk out occasionally (buzzing would get louder and then it would die) - replaced the in tank lifter and it was completed fixed.

if it only getting 2v id suspect its the realy or wiring that kaput.  if you suspect lift pump is draining too much power, unplug it!
