Help changing cambelt on a mk2 8v gti
« on: 05 April 2008, 13:40 »
Ive recently been changing the head gasket on my mk2 8v gti and its now come down to putting it all back together but i cant seem to get at the cambelt to change it. Do i need a special tool to remove the other belts first before i change the cambelt or is ther an easier way?

I'm better with 16v'ers, but you'll prob need to remove the vibration dampers (sprockets), the PAS sprocket if present, and then the upper and lower cam covers. To loosen the belt, undo the cam belt tensioner.

I would invest in a Haynes!! Not sure how you did the HG without one??

Yep all the other belts have got to come off!

A haynes would be best bet me thinks :)

Ive got a haynes but its not detailed enough to be honest didnt use it once removing the head. To remove the vibration dampers do you need a special tool as it looks like one is held on with a big star shaped nut?

Its easy to take them off, you just loosen the mounting bolts and turn the toothed adjuster thing, the belts will just come off.
