Hi guys,

I'm a newbie to this forum so firstly, hello! :)

Ok, I have a few problems with my GTi (It's an N reg Mk3 2.0 8v).

When driving it seems to be wheezy and reluctant to pick up. Basically, in order to accelerate hard you have to come back of the throttle slightly to a point where it picks up. If you don;t it is very lumpy and rough, almost wheezing. However, even when backing off it still seems wheezy, hesitant and generally a bit lumpy. In addittion, the normal throttle progression isn't as smooth as it should be and it's slightly jolty - pinking a bit maybe?? I think this may be an additional problem in its self. It also occasionally stalls when cold.

It ticks over nicely and sounds sweet. No oil or fluid leaks. Idle is just under 900rpm, but it slightly vibrates adversely (It's not always a smooth idle).

I have cleaned out the crank case breathers which were clogged with mayo because the car only usually does short journeys. However I have done about 500 miles in it this week since and its just as bad.

It's so annoying because as you know, these cars should be great fun and smooth to drive! Any ideas please??!!!!! I'm stuck.

Thanks,

PearlSilver.

SNAP!!! Ive got the same problem not quite severe as yours but its still there! Ive just had my car plugged in to a vag com and all it came back with was Low voltage supplying the air bag system - No faults with the engine system! my idle is very erratic floats between 800/1000 revs - Not sure what way to go next!"£$

hey guys...

my 16v had recently been suffering from stuttering accelerating and stalling at junctions when cold...

all it needed was a new coolant temp sensor (£26 from vw for 16v, or closer to a tenner from euro parts etc for the 8v i think)...

it drives like new now!

other things which it could be...

throttle body needs cleaning...
or
faulty ECU relay or FUEL PUMP RELAY...
or
Cracked/ dirty breather hoses/ pipes to the air box etc...
or
ISV needs cleaning...

theres loads of similar posts on the mk3 pages,,, try searching for "cutting out" or something and you'll see loads of solutions!

Ok guys thanks,

I cleaned the throttle body out and unblocked the manky crank breather tubes.
No avail.

However I have fixed it and found the problem.

All I did was unplug the MAF sensor. It drives like a TOTALLY different car. I will try cleaning the sensor or replace with a new one, in the meantime it's staying unplugged.

Simple fix - Suggest anyone with similar probs tries it before buying anything.
